They All Die At The End

Theatresauce | theatre | 2023

Thosai at funerals. Unspoken words of love. Missed calls from Amma. Unwritten letters to Appa. Five men reflect and interrogate what it means to be Malaysian and Indian - in the past, present and imagination.

Directed by Dhinesha Karthigesu

Kirthana Kuhendran - Sound Designer and Sound Operator

Working on my first devised theatre with the combining poetic text, dialogue, music and movement. I worked closely with the director and actors to curate the show with them from scratch through workshops, experiments and conceptualising the entire experience.

FORTUNE KOOKY

KuLT Productions | Musical | 2022

“The title is a play on words as the fortune cookie is an element in the story. The reason it is spelt ‘kooky’ is that the musical examines how when it comes to fortune, money, and becoming rich, people tend to act a little bit crazy,” Toh explained.

Directed by Nicole Ann Thomas

Written by Terence Toh, Lydia Tong and Kelvin Loh

Kirthana Kuhendran - Sound Designer, Graphic Designer, Social Media Lead and Side Actress

Working both on and off stage for this production allowed me a better insight when designing the soundscapes and effects for the show including unique and custom designs such as "Gong with Seagulls and Ocean" as the God of Wealth enters the scene from his Summer Vacation.

A Christmas Carol

theatrethreesixty | theatre | 2021

A local adaptation of the British classic 'A Christmas Carol' aims to bring hope and cheer to those who need a second chance directed by Christopher Ling

Kirthana Kuhendran - Sound Designer and Stage Manager

Sound Design for this show was minimal but also fantastical as we encounter the supernatural. The design of building tension and creating a narrative using just sound can be heard in the scene where Marley visits Ebi only told by sound and Ebi's reaction.

Orang Bulan

theatrethreesixty | theatre | 2021

The play, Orang Bulan, is "a commentary on what it means to be human when thrust into situations of unimaginable stress and uncertainty — something we have become all too familiar with in recent days", says its director, Christopher Ling of theatrethreesixty.

The SCI-FI play is the curtain opener for a new performing arts venue in Bandar Utama called Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre (PJPaC).

Kirthana Kuhendran - Sound Designer and Sound Operator

Composing for this play and working alongside Christopher Ling was exciting as the challenge to create a Sci-Fi soundtrack and create the effect and ambience of being on the moon.

24 Jam Dalam 37 Tahun

theatrethreesixty | theatre | 2020

“To be a great human being, you should not have a father figure.”

Haikal struggles with finding out what it means to be a good man without having his father around for much of his life. He questions his parents’ fractured relationship, his place in the world, what he means to the people around him and whether having a father figure is necessary at all to lead a happy and successful life.

Directed by theatrethreesixty’s artistic director Christopher Ling and written by Khairi Anwar (IQ.Rock, POHLITHIK) of Anomalist Production.

Kirthana Kuhendran - Sound Designer and Assistant Stage Manager

My first experience doing Sound Design for plays. Worked closely with Christopher Ling and composer Takahara to create a soundscape that mixes music, effects and ambience to transform the small blackbox into different spaces.

THE WORKING DEAD

KuLT Productions | Musical | 2019

The Working Dead is a fully Malaysian musical comedy presented by KuLT Productions about overworked corporate zombies.

NOMINATED 17th BOH CAMERONIAN ARTS AWARDS Best Sound Design for Musical Theatre: Kirthana Kuhendran and Akai for The Working Dead by KuLT Productions

Kirthana Kuhendran - Sound Designer and Lead Actress

This musical was my first attempt at Sound Design. Working closely with the director and musical director, I created whimsical moments to match the comical narrative and created a unique magic sound effect for the Bomoh and her Zombies. I also designed the soundboard that was used in this production via ableton and using the Launchpad Mini to allow on-the-spot layering and more accurate effects following the live actors.
